ALL EVENT INFORMATION

Hosted at Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, the Clinic followed a programme which covered key aspects of sailing the boat, coaching, rules, boat preparation, training programmes, psychology, physiology, tactics, race strategy and more. The daily mix of shore side theory and on-water practical sessions was combined with daily racing. Each day kicked off with a de-brief of the previous day’s session, accompanied by videos, and questions and answers with the coaches and sailors. The daily programme is detailed in the Clinic Programme and General Conditions.

Gonçalo Ribeiro is well-known to sailors in Brazil as he coached their teams in past years, and took them to major 420 Championships.

Jose Massapina, 420 Class Vice-President responsible for development attended the clinic and presented the work of the International 420 Class Association, and availability of online training resources: the 420 TO THE MAX video, introducing a range of specific techniques and demonstration of how to master them in different wind and sea conditions. Available in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese, 420 TO THE MAX has racked up in excess of 360,000 views on YouTube alone. The 420 EXERCISE E-BOOK was also presented, which showcases world class training techniques and strategies on Performance Improvement for Coaches and Sailors. The online e-book introduces a selection of carefully chosen exercises, with accompanying video and commentary, to provide a step by step path towards skills improvement.

A significant challenge for Brazilian sailors is the cost of purchasing sailing equipment in the nation where there is not a national builder, as the law sets very high market tariffs on imports. So many sailors are using old 420 equipment, but regardless the level of skills and on-water performance are impressive.

Immediately after the 420 Clinic, the 420 Class South American Championship took place at the same venue with twenty-nine teams competing in the 12 race series. Brazilian teams dominated the top four places, led by the new South American Champions, Bernardo Peixoto/ Marcos Arndt. Chile’s Benjamin Fuenzalida/ Marcos Fuentes Versar finished 4th and Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Queirel/Justo Varela Iraola in 5th.

Next up for the 2019 420 Class Development Programme is the Coaches and Sailors Clinic in the Ukraine, 1-5 May 2019.
