High winds at the John Merricks Tiger Trophy made for a challenging weekend at Rutland Water Sailing Club. The penultimate event of the GJW Direct Sailjuice Winter Series attracted 118 entries, but with a forecast of 20-30 knot cold north-westerlies, the weekend was always going to be a war of attrition.

The first race was sailed in 18-22 knots, with occasional gusts of 25. The breeze picked up even more for race 2, with just 44 finishers. The war of attrition continued into race 3, with just 48 boats starting and only 38 hardy finishers.

Katie Davies/Grace Summers finished 11th overall in the handicap and were top placed 420, with Arran Holman/Alles Fogglia pushing hard to finish 1 point and 1 place behind. Finishing as 3rd 420 and 14th overall were Joe Burns/Matt Shorrock.

Since the Tiger Trophy was adopted as a regatta to raise money for the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST) with a large proportion of the entry fee going directly to the JMST, this has proven one of the most popular handicap events of the winter. It takes place on Rutland Water in the centre of Great Britain.
