Around 14 tons of waste, glass, paper, plastic, were collected during the 420 World Championship.

The waste collected during the 16 days of the pre-event and the Worlds, was weighted and delivered to Algar (regional waste management company). This waste generated an amount of money that was given to the local institution Centro de Apoio à Criança de Quarteira.

It was the first time a sailing event was classified “Eco-Event” by Algar. The certification was obtained due to several initiatives from Vilamoura Sailing:
Eco-Trash bags, produced from recycled canvas, were distributed to all coaches, to be used on the coach boats.

Aluminum bottles were given to all sailors and coaches, in order to reduce the use of plastic bottles. Water points were made available in the boat park, allowing all participants to refill their bottles. Eco-points were available in the boat park. Event Prizes were produced in recycled local Cork.

According to the Vilamoura Sailing GM, Nuno Reis, the 420 Worlds was the kick start to implement all around the year Eco-conscience in the Sailing Center.

The Vilamoura Sailing Center welcomes over 1000 sailor a year in their facilities, and the Eco-approach will have a hide reach, as sailors from over 60 countries are expected for the next season.

Up to 2023 Vilamoura Sailing will host over 40 major International events and over 10 000 participants are expected in this period of time.
