Brazilian 420 Sailors off to ISAF Youth Worlds

Jun 2014

The 12 sailors that will represent Brazil in the next ISAF Youth Worlds in Tavira, Portugal, were reunited in São Paulo this weekend for the first Youth Sailing Clinic, promoted by CBVela.

Seventy five sailors with ages between 12 and 19 were at the event in the following classes: 420, Laser Radial, Byte, Optimist, RS:X and T293, 29er, Hobie Cat 16 and Lightining.

"This Clinic was really good for us because we had the opportunity to sail with other boats and to have the Olympic Team coaches looking at us. I hope after this we can fight for the gold again at the Youth Worlds", said Tiago Brito, gold medallists in the 420 Boys at the 2013 ISAF Youth Worlds in Limassol, Cyprus.

The idea was to help them develop as sailors and to get know each other. CBVela held this first clinic to improve with practice, and have the coaches get to know better the sailors, assisting them to find the right class and the right partner for their future. The top two sailors in each Class, as well as the qualifiers for the Youth Olympic Games and other Youth Class Worlds events participated in three days of intense training.

The selection to the Youth Worlds Team was held in Florianópolis in March. Meet the team that will represent Brazil in Tavira, Portugal:

Tiago Brito, 18, and Philipp Essle, 17 - 420:
Tiago won the title in Chipre, in 2013, with former crew Andrei Kneipp. Philipp replaced Andrei due to his age. They were friends before and, despite the fact that they live in different cities, they've been doing a lot of trainings in São Paulo and Porto Alegre.

Giuliana Tozzi, 17, and Marina Issler, 15 - 420:
This is their first time at the Youth Worlds. They have the same problem of Tiago and Philip, because Giuliana lives in São Paulo and Marina in Rio de Janeiro, but they try to sail every weekend in both cities.

Kim Vidal, 18, and Antonio Lopes, 16 - SL16:
This will be Kim's 4th Youth Worlds. He won in 2011, was 2nd on 2012, both with Martin Lowy, and was 4th in 2013 with Antonio. Their main goal for this event is to be on the podium, since this is Kim's last opportunity to sail the Youth Worlds.

Martin Lowy, 17 - Laser Radial
This is Martin's 4th Youth Worlds. He won two as the skipper of SL16 with Kim Vidal and last year he decided to change to Laser, finishing 28th. This year his goal is to be on the podium.
His mentors are Robert Scheidt and Bruno di Bernardi, coach for the Brazilian Laser sailor Bruno Fontes.

Maria Carolina Boabaid, 16 - Laser Radial:
Maria Carolina and her sister Tina are Laser Radial promises for the future. This is her first time on the Youth Worlds, but she is confident that can obtain a good result.

Antonio Aranha, 16, and Stephan Kunath, 14 - 29er:
Antonio was the Brazilian 29er skipper in 2013, finishing 20th at the Youth Worlds. He's been sailing the boat since 2010 but only last year he decided to do it seriously. This year he will sail with Stephan who is going to his first Youth Worlds.

Maria Carolina Cruz, 17 - RS:X:
The Youth Worlds will be her first international event ever. She change from Optmist to RS:X last year and now is trying to learn as much as she can to have a good result at the event.
