Day 1 Report for the 2011 Dutch Youth Regatta
The opening day of the 2011 Dutch Youth Regatta delivered two races for the forty three 420 teams racing at Workum, The Netherlands. This event is also the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships.
The opening day of the 2011 Dutch Youth Regatta delivered two races for the forty three 420 teams racing at Workum, The Netherlands. This event is also the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships.
The first race of the day was sailed in a light north westerly breeze of 7-10 knots. The Swiss ladies team of Linda Farhni and Maja Siegenthaler led from before the first mark and held their lead to take the gun, without any real challenge from the other teams. Japan's ladies team of Kiara Tsunoda and Ayano Furuya also sailed a very steady race and finished second. Having demonstrated some clever tactical decisions, in particular in the second upwind beat, the Dutch team of Pieter Goedhart and Lars van Stekelenborg finished third.
In the second race the wind increased and with a wind shift at the start, the teams at the Race Committee end of the line were given an early advantage, which saw some of the leaders from race 1 halfway down the fleet. Floris and Laurens van de Werken produced a clear start and managed to take advantage of the shift and were first at the upwind mark. They consistently increased the distance between themselves and the chasing Japanese team of Tsunoda/Furuya, who ultimately finished in fifth. The Swiss ladies team of Linda Farhni and Maja Siegenthaler managed to improve their position during the race and make significant gains to finish in second overall and become the overall leaders after day 1.
