After three races and a “hard slog”, David Gilmour & Andres Noe of Royal Freshwater Bay, Silver winners last year, took the lead at the Australian National Championships at Sandringham Bay YC in Melbourne. Sam Kivell & Max Taylor, current National Champions, are in 2nd on 9 points, with Mark Whittington & Scott Sharpe, following their triumph at SIRs in Sydney before Christmas, in close contention on 10 points.

The “wind was a hot Northerly land breeze, 10-13 knots for Race 1. Dave Gilmour took the race. Race 2 was again a mixed bag with a very shifty race. Race 3 was started in 5-6 knts, hot, and the wind gradiating to the south until the second work when a Southerly front came through, 18-28knts catching a good portion of the fleet wrong footed. There were capsizes, broken forestays and a few shredded sails”, says our man on the spot, Allan Carney. Sounds like a good 420 event!

Results are posted on the regatta website on Sail Melbourne and daily reports from Allan Carney appear on the Australian 420 Class website.
