ITALY AND GREAT BRITAIN TOP LEADERBOARD AT EUROSAF YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

The EUROSAF Youth Sailing European Championship which take place annually, see Europe’s top youth sailors come together to battle for European honours. This year’s host was Neusiedl am See in Austria, with racing from 17-21 August.

Light winds and shifty conditions challenged sailors throughout the week, but it was a different story on the final day. Sailors were greeted by light wind and rain, but after a short postponement launched in a building breeze reaching 25 knots. 

Six races for the 420 girls fleet, saw the pairing of Hatty Morsley/Pippa Cropley (GBR) lead the 420 girls’ fleet from the go without a race outside the top two to secure gold in emphatic style with four wins. Second to Italy’s Arianna Passamonti/Giulia Fava 15 points behind the British, and third to Poland’s Wiktoria Wrobleska/Wernika Sawicka.

Pippa Cropley commented on her event, “It was really good, some really tight fleet racing, great competition. We really enjoyed it and learnt a lot and to come to away with gold feels amazing.”

In the 11-team boys event, a similar domination from Italy, who finished 15 points ahead with Andrea Abbruzzese/Fabio Boldrini leading the charge. Second to Great Britain’s James Clemetson/Will Birch-Tomlin and third to Austria’s Nikolaus Kampelmuhler/Niklas Haberl.

Great Britain were crowned Nations Cup winners of the 2016 EUROSAF Youth European Championships.
