AFRICA

South Africa

Amongst the many teams making their debut at the upcoming 420 Worlds in Portugal will be South Africa’s Matt Ashwell/Rivaldo Arendse. Ashwell won the 2018 Optimist African Championship and then switched to the 420, with the pair heading to the 420 Worlds with some support from the Organizing Committee. Read on.

The Western Cape Provincial Championships unfolded for the ten-boat 420 fleet in some exciting breeze over the 9 race series, with Ross MacKinnon/Alex Falcon putting together a consistent scorecard to snap up victory.

The MacKinnon/Falcon partnership also claimed top prize at the Admiral’s Regatta at Hout Bay Yacht Club the weekend before, proving they are every bit as adept at racing on the ocean.

Looking ahead to mid-September, the 420 Class will be holding a Coaches and Sailors Clinic in South Africa – find out more.

AMERICAS

Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Chile

Massive thanks to the Asociación Argentina Clase Internacional 420 who in partnership with the Federación Argentina de Yachting organized an impressive promotional event, introducing 140 junior sailors to the 420 Class and welcoming the next generation to enjoy 420 Sailing.

It was a 1,2,3 for Brazil's 420 Class teams at the 420 South American Championships as Bernardo Peixoto/Marcos Arndt took victory, second to Marina da Fonte/Marina Arndt and third to Leonardo Lombardi/Pietro Geronimi. 29 teams from Argentina, Brazil and Chile competed for titles in the Open, Women and Junior divisions. ASIA

Japan, Malaysia, Thailand

Japan's Oishi Shimizu/Aoki Taketo have won the right to represent Japan at the Youth Sailing World Championships in the 420 men, and Kobayashi Hajime/ Hakuto Natsumi, who were last year's All Japan 420 Winners, are selected in the 420 women. Both teams were selected from their results at the JOC Junior Olympic Cup.

A tiebreak finish at Thailand’s Top of the Gulf Regatta saw Jedtavee Yongyuennarn/Chakkaphat Wiriyakitti (THA) come out victorious over Malaysia's Muhammad Syafie Bin Ali/ Ikrami Hakimin Bin Markham.

Ten 420 teams from Malaysia and Thailand faced off at the annual Sattahip Regatta hosted at the Naval Rating School Chumpol in Thailand. Top women's team in 4th overall were Nor Nabila Natasha/Gabrielle Marygrace (MAS).

Facebook is a major source to keep up to date with 420 sailing around the world and we have been enjoying following the 420 activities at Koh Phangan Youth Sailing in Thailand, a community led project with 420s sailing off the beach. The use of boats is free of charge for young sailors, the water is blue and no wetsuits are needed.

EUROPE

Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland

Unsurprisingly, most of this month’s racing action has centred around Europe and the season is going strong with some super healthy fleets. Setting the marker for start lines are Coppa Italia II in Italy with 86 boats, Campeonato de España with 85 boats, and 83 at Germany’s Schweriner Sparkassen-Cup.

Italy has just wrapped up its four-event Coppa series, with different teams controlling each leaderboard. Paolo Iacchia/Gabriele Romeo won Coppa Italia II, with Carlotta Scodnik/Camilla Scodnik the top women’s team in 5th. New faces in Davide Manica/Eugneio Di Meco took over to dominate at Coppa Italia III, and top women's team in 4th overall were Margherita Barro/Matilde Parladori. The win at Coppa Italia IV went to Tommaso Cilli/Bruno Mantero who found their groove in the second half of the regatta, with Michela Stefani/Cerdeira Jamila top women's team in 4th.

Switzerland's CSP series has featured strong racing and are part of the selection process to determine teams heading to the 420 Worlds and 420 Junior Europeans. Last weekend's CSP Ascona marked the final selection event with the win going to Achille Casco/Elliot Schick (SUI). Sophie Mosegaard/Fiona Scharer pulled off the win at the opening CSP event of 2019 racing on a mountain lake where the deep water course was set with GPS controlled marks. Catch up on all the news and results on the Swiss National Class Association page.

More lake sailing in Austria with teams from Austria, Czech Republic and Germany battling it out at the SP Regatta and OSTM on Lake Achensee, where glory went to Leopold Karl/Karl Kammerer (AUT).

The Irish Sailing Youth National Championships saw the Ferguson sisters, Nicola and Fiona, stake out five race wins and sucessfully defend the title and earn the right to represent their nation at the 420 Worlds in Portugal.

Germany’s Schweriner Sparkassen-Cup saw Florian Krauss/Jannis Sümmchen top the 83 boat leaderboard and Theresa Steinlein/Lina Plettner finish as top women's team in 2nd overall. Follow all event results on the German National Class Association page.

Bulgaria's Martin Gerov/An-Nicole Kaneva won Bourgas Sailing Week, closely chased by Marina Dimitrova/Demetra Doycheva in 2nd.

Jonathan Steidle/Leonardo Honold (GER) claimed 4 wins from 12 races to wrap up a phenomenal winning delta of 51 points in the 76 boat fleet at 2019 Coupe Internationale Méditerranéenne de l'Amitié (CIMA) in France. Event #4 of the EUROSAF Series, this pair look to be well on their way to securing the EUROSAF 420 Class Race Circuit in its inaugural year

Haydn Sewell/William Heathcote wrapped up victory at the RYA Youth Nationals in Weymouth, with Vita Heathcote/Milly Boyle finishing in second overall and top women's team. The British 420 Class has put together a great video wrap of racing and training action for the opening months of the 2019 season – take a watch.

63 teams from Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia competed at Slovenia's Izola Spring Cup, with 9 races pitching the host nation's Celestina Sabadin/Veronika Francic to victory from their super consistent performance.

Conrad Konitzer/Fernando Rodriguez won the Campeonato de España seizing a dominant 22 point winning victory over the 85 boat fleet. Patricia Reino/Isabel Laiseca were top placed women in 8th overall.

Luia Niza/Paulo Baptista kept the fleet behind them at the 2019 Portuguese National Championship, counting all finishes well inside the top 10, to claim the title over Antonio Pereira/Joao Bolina, with Manuel Fortunato/Frederico Baptista finishing third and top placed junior team. Beatriz Gago/Marta Fortunato were top placed women.

In early May, the Southern Australia 420 fleet celebrated their sailors’ achievements at a special presentation night – congratulations to all.

Training continues in the Southern Hemisphere Winter, with most recently the Victoria 420 Class Association organizing the hugely popular Flinders Camp where plenty of Aussie sailors got together to #ShareTheKnowledge.

New Zealand hosted the 2019 CLC Group NZ Secondary Schools Nationals at Sandspit Yacht Club, bringing the best young team racers face to face in the 420 Class, with victory to Rangitoto College.

Ten teams entered Australia's Victorian Youth Championships hosted at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron with James Jackson/Lachie Caldwell claiming an all-win scorecard and victory.

SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE

420 Development Programme

Our 2019 development plan is in full swing, with clinic already completed in Brazil and the Ukraine. There are lots more opportunities coming up for coaches and sailors to improve their 420 Class knowledge, with clinics being held in Chinese Taipei, Lithuania, Portugal in the coming months. Later in the year, we will be moving to Australia and South Africa, as well as more dates planned across Asia. The 5-day clinics combine a mix of class room theory, shore side simulation and on-water practical sessions.

As with all the 420 Class development initiatives, registration to the clinics is free of charge, with participants just needing to cover costs for their travel, accommodation and daily meals.

Club Poseidonas in Lithuania is our next destination for a Coaches and Sailors Clinic, and lead coach will again be Nikos Drougkas (GRE) from 22-26 June 2019. Registration is open until 15 June 2019.

Hosted in partnership with the Chinese Taipei Sailing Association, the Chinese Taipei clinic from 15-19 August is open to coaches and sailors of all youth classes across Asia, and will be run by the Nikos Drougkas (GRE). Registration is open until 5 August 2019.

The five-day 420 Class Coaches and Sailors Clinic in Brazil welcomed 5 coaches and 34 sailors from Argentina, Brazil and Chile who improved their skills under the expertise of 420 Class appointed coach Gonçalo Ribeiro (POR). Hosted at Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, the Clinic followed a programme which covered key aspects of sailing the boat, coaching, rules, boat preparation, training programmes, psychology, physiology, tactics, race strategy and more. Click here to find out more.

Nikos Drougkas (GRE) led a busy and massively informative 5-day Coaches and Sailors Clinic in the Ukraine in early May. Hosted at the Black Sea Yacht Club in Odessa. Lots learnt and one of the many outcomes was that teams from Lithuania and the Ukraine will be competing at the Youth Sailing Worlds in Poland, and a team from Ukraine has already confirmed it will be competing at the 420 Worlds in Portugal this summer. A great outcome. Click here to find out more.

Attracting the next generation to the 420 Class treads a proven pathway, but we still like to meet our new sailors as early as possible. So, no surprise the 420 Class was a huge draw at the Easter Optimist Regatta on Lake Garda, with over 1100 Optimist sailors from 38 nations competing, and plenty of interest as they got to find out about 420 sailing. Over two days, the on-site 420 Class representative chatted to numerous sailors, parents and coaches, sharing information about the boat, offering have a go and trapezing sessions to serve up a first taste of the fun of 420 sailing.

Next up we will be introducing the 420 Class to Optimist sailors at the European Championships in Crozon Morgat, France at the end of June 2019.

And don't miss our pre-Worlds Clinic in Vilamoura, Portugal from 28 June-2 July. Click here to find out more.
