Jul 2019

Suddenly what a difficult day for the 420 fleet!! The wind looked very promising in the morning but it got lighter and lighter in Area Bravo, the farthest one from Villagarcia, and the race committee had no option but to abandon the first race and start again.

What initially had looked like a quick good day for the Spaniards, with the second position for Martín Wizner and Pedro Ameneiro (RCN Vigo) in the first race, turned into a long wait for the 420 Open and under-17 fleets. Watch the day’s highlights video.

Conditions were such that the race committee of Area Alpha decided to move the fleet to Area Bravo one the 470 had finished the last race of the day.  Wind in Area Bravo picked up to 14-15 knots and the 420 could finally complete the schedule and close the qualifying series. Nevertheless, it was a long day on the water with the Blue fleet finishing the last race at 19.55.

The Spanish fleet, with some strong crews Sailing together in the yeallow group, was at high level. Könitzer and Rodríguez (Baleares) scored 7th and 3rd and lost the leadership for 1 point, but still have all options to get Gold while they are making good decisions on the water. Aviv Rozen y Tomer Hendel, with a 2nd and a 6th in the Blue fleet become the new leaders in the overall after an excellent qualifying series. The third position is for Patryk Kosmalski y Tomasz Lewandowski (Poland), who were 9th in the 2018 under-17 420 Europeans held in Sesimbra and have been very regular in the qualifying series (8-28 -1-2-8-1).

Within the Spanish fleet, the boats from Galicia had their best day. Although Jacobo Garcia and Toni Ripoll (RCN Sanxenxo) scored 20th in the first race, they improved up to the 8th in the second race which allow them to maintain the 4th position in the overall. Wizner and Ameneiro scored 2nd and 7th and finished the qualifying series 6th in the overall, after having gained fifteen positions in two days. Finally, Melsion Rosselló and Pedro Ginard (RCN Palma), with a 4th and a 1st climb to the 8th position. All of them have entered in the top-ten for the finals.

In the Women fleet, Melina Pappa and Maria Tsamopoulou (Piraeus Sailing Club) started the day with a bad 15th but finished 1st in the second race and stay 9th in the overall. The Polish Zofia Korsak and Karolina Cendrowska have also entered in the battle for the podium while Marina Garau and Blanca Cabot (CM San Antonio de la Playa) with 45 points are in position to get the Bronze.

The lead in the under-17 fleet changes for the second day in a row. Antonio Martino and Joan Catalá (Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa) fall to the second position after two discreet races (8th and 12th) and the Italians Oscar Pousché y Luca Coslovich (Società Nautica Pietas Julia) become leaders, regardless the very bad start they had today, which they solved with the first position in the second race.  Alberto Morales and Miguel Bethencourt (Lanzarote) fall down to the 5th position after their 21st and 23rd of today.

The lead in Women under-17 is for Neus Ballester/Andrea Perelló.
