Another day of fantastic race conditions with two races for each of the Open, Women and U17 fleets, although the lighter breeze off Vilamoura presented a new set of race track challenges and a change in form for some teams.

Racing continues on Wednesday 10 July with two races scheduled for all fleets starting at 1400 hours.

420 OPEN
Defending World Champions Seb Menzies/Blake McGlashan racked up another win in the 420 Open fleet, but all change as they followed up with a 20th marking their lowest result of the series. A more consistent performance from Nacho Davila/Javier Mestre rewarded them with 2,7 to elevate up to 2nd overall and close their points gap to the series leaders.

A push from 2018 bronze medallists Martin Wizner/Pedro Ameneiro (ESP) of 3,4 moves the pair to 3rd overall and well in the podium hunt with 4 races to go.

All top teams are already counting a double-digit discard score, so any errors will see them plummet down the leaderboard.

Great racing from Hong Kong’s Duncan Gregor/Matthew Clark who found a change of pace in the final race of the day and delivered their best result of the series, a second place to jump up to 26th.

Leading the silver fleet are France’s Basile Poisson/Paul Paturle with scores of 2,3.

420 WOMEN
Yesterday Great Britain’s Vita Heathcote/Milly Boyle burst to the top of the leader board and today the pair cemented their lead, scoring 1,4 to give themselves a 16 point advantage over the next closest team. The duo have been partnered for many years in the 420 enjoying numerous successes along the way, including silver at last year’s Youth Sailing Worlds and are reigning British Women’s Youth National Champions.

Up their sleeves, the British pair also hold a very low discard score, a 7th place, compared to other teams’ double digit scores, so know they can take a risk if necessary without losing too much.

Spain’s Paula Van Wieringen/Maria Del Mar Gil make a significant 5 place climb up the leaderboard, from 7th to 2nd. Holding firm in third are Italy’s Irene Calici/Petra Gregori.

Leading the silver fleet are Elena Oddone/Francesca Riano of Italy.

Greece’s Odysseas Spanakis/Konstaninos Michalopoulos claimed the U17 bronze medals at last year’s 420 Worlds, and have been on a race track assault here in Vilamoura as they hunt down the gold medals. The pair has claimed multiple race wins so far, adding a sixth victory to their scorecard today.

France’s Ange Delerce/Timothee Rossi continue to be their closest rivals holding firm in second overall, 12 points behind the Greeks, with Floiran Krauus/Jannis Suemmchen (GER) retaining third.

A best yet finish for the women’s pair of Dimitra Vartholomaiou/Metaxia Gogou of Greece who took out the race 8 win to establish themselves in 9th place in the women’s leaderboard. But it is Neus Ballester/Andrea Perello (ESP) who are the top placed women in 5th overall, with Elena Sotiriou/Eleni Giannouli (GRE) next in 9th and the USA’s Vanessa Lahrkamp/Katherine Mcnamara in 12th.
