Southern Charter Grand Slam 2
Great to see a fleet of ten 420s out to contend Grand Slam 2 of the Southern Charter Series in South Africa over the weekend of 1-2 December 2012.
Hosted by the Theewater Sports Club, with five races over the 2 days, and one discard to shape things up nicely. A disappointing opening race for Sibusiso Sizaru/Marlon Jones of Team Race Ahead gave them a sixth place. But this was not to last for long as they went on to clean up and take race wins from 3 of the next 4 races and finished second in the other. A decisive victory placed them 6 points ahead of Heidi Burger/Dale Panagos, with Tiran Long/Dylan Long in third.
One face not on the start line was Olympian Asenathi Jim. A former 420 sailor, Jim had joined the fleet for Grand Slam 1, but this time was unable to compete as he is back racing back his 470 at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne, Australia.
Shoreside entertainment was courtesy of the Synergy Live 2012 Music Festival, featuring 100 of South Africa’s top artists.
