USA Atlantic Coast Championships

Nov 2013

With quirky weather more like the coast of New England than the Chesapeake Bay, the Race Committee ran its last race of the season for 13 very competitive 420 teams contesting the Atlantic Coast Championship hosted at the Annapolis Yacht Club from 16-17 November 2013.

The teams came from as far away as Connecticut all in the hunt for points that might get them to their goal of participating in the 420 World Championships next year.

Saturday’s predictions held true for shifty conditions in the afternoon with the breeze dropping out during the last race of the day. A race win to Chrissie Klingler/Vicki Thompson set them on the right path, with Jack Parkin/Florian van Dikye in second and Chris Keller/Peter Schneider in third.

Whilst, Sunday morning’s fog enveloped the entire Annapolis area including the intended course location PRO Taran Teague was considering which led to the welcome decision to keep sailors ashore until it was considered safe to tow.

The committee boats were on station reporting in to the PRO with regular weather updates. Taking advantage in a slight break in the “pea soup” coaches ran practice starts and other drills to keep the juniors on their toes which allowed the committee to consider their options for safe and fair racing. When reports came that Annapolis Harbor was clear and AYC’s 2nd day of Frostbite racing would commence on time, the PRO sent the Windward Mark boat in to an area just outside of Lake Ogleton with the balance of the Committee set up for a final trapezoid course far enough outside of the drop mark for the Frostbite racers to not cause confusion for either regatta.

Two races in rapid succession came off without a hitch, and Kingler/Thopmson secured another win and a 2nd place to take the Championship title. Second overall for Keller/Schneider from a 3,3,1 scoreline and third to Parkin/van Dikye from a 2,4,3 card.
