35 teams were welcomed by some big air to kick off day 1 at the 420 Class North American Championship, hosted at Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami, Florida, 14-16 January 2017.

The shifty 12-18 south-easterly breeze guaranteed tight racing, and each of the opening 3 races was won by a different team, with the top 5 separated by just 3 points at the end of the day.

Tight racing continued on day 2, with a total change in the 5 positions changing day 1, as 4 races shuffled the scoreboard up. Three different teams won a race each, with Carmen Cowles/Emma Cowles taking out two victories to sweep into the overall lead.

Onto the final day of racing, featuring super consistency from Joseph Hermus and Walter Henry, scoring a 2,1 to win the 420 North American Championship by 1 point over Michelle Lahrkamp/Gabriella DeBello who took the girls title, with the Cowles sisters in third.

Just a few weeks previously the leaderboard had been somewhat different at the Open Orange Bowle Regatta, 27-30 December, with Carmen Cowles/Emma Cowles wrapping up the wind and Hermus/Henry in 5th.

Champagne conditions were dominant throughout the three-day series, showcasing sailing at its best.
