Racing in the 420 fleet at 2011 Kieler Woche got underway on 23 June, with an impressive 177 boats from 17 countries contesting the titles. The 420s have been split into three fleets for the qualification rounds, so there were several race winners yesterday. The performance of the day goes to Greece's Alexandros Kavas and Georg Kavas representing the Yacht Club of Greece who posted two race wins to lead the fleet after day 1.

Second overall are France's Guillaume Pirouelle and Valentin Sipan who posted a 1,2 with Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough from Australia in third.

The top placed mixed team are Michael Wood and Hermione Stanley (GBR) who delivered a 7,5 opening scoreline.

Many of these teams will also be facing each other on the startline at the forthcoming ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Croatia next month, including Pirouelle/Sipan and Galloway/Gough – so the teams will all be keeping an eye on their competition beyond Kieler Woche.

However, with the split fleets, many of the teams will not meet their closest rivals until later in the series.

The 2010 winners from Singapore are not here to defend their title, but there are three Singaporeans teams flying the flag in Kiel, with Russel Kan and Jeremiah Yeo currently in sixth overall.
