Reports by the US International 420 Class Association

Day 1 report

Champagne conditions at the Atlantic Coast Championship today - the first US qualifier 2022 Worlds and Jr. Euros.

Southerlies of 15 gusting 25, big waves, sunny skies and warm temps near 80 were perfect surfing conditions for the 13-boat fleet, many just returned from 3-days of heavy air last weekend at US Youth Champs.

Reigning U17 Open world champions Freddie Parkin / Thomas Whidden had 3 bullets in today’s 4 races and atop the leader board. Reigning Women’s world champions Vanessa Lahrkamp / Katherine McNamara are 2nd, followed by Cole & Annabel Woodworth.

This 2-day regatta concludes tomorrow - the wind is forecast to shift behind tonight’s cold front which should result in a shift, gusty 12-18 knot Northwesterly and air temps in the mid 60s (still unseasonably warm).

Day 2 report

Another amazing day of I420 racing at yesterday’s conclusion of the 2-day Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted by Indian Harbor YC in Greenwich, CT.
It was a classic Fall day on LI Sound with a blustery, shifty 15-20 knot Northwesterly, and air temp in the low 60s that tested sailors’ tactics and boat boat handling.

Congrats to reigning U17 Open World Champion Freddie Parkin / Thomas Whidden who battled with Women’s World Champion Vanessa Lahrkamp / Katherine McNamara over 7 races to take the top spot by just 2 points. Cole and Annabel Woodworth were 3rd.

With 2 World Champion teams on the race track, the level of competition is high, which also helps improve everyone’s skills across the fleet. We were also pleased to welcome a team from Canada.

This was the first Team USA qualifier for 2022 Worlds (Lake Balaton, Hungary) and 2022 Jr. Euros (Villamoura, Portugal). The three Gold Medal winning 2021 World Champion teams get an automatic invitation to Team USA for 2022.

Huge thanks to Indian Harbor Yacht Club, and long-time Event Chair, David Ornstein for hosting our ACCs again this year. IHYC runs a top flight regatta both on the water and off.
