The 175 crews include almost 250 sailors with racing set to take place in 13 events across six classes of boat with the 420, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Techno 293, 29er and Hobie 16 fleets all hitting the water.

The Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 and Techno 293 will feature racing in boys and girls classes, with the 420 and 29er including boys, girls and open, while the Hobie 16 will be an open class.

The fleets have an international feel with crews from eight countries set to take part, including the home country Australia, Norway, Hong Kong, Singapore, Denmark, Japan, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

Competition will be tight throughout the fleets with sailors racing not only for the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship titles but for positions in the Australian Youth Sailing Team to contest the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Ireland in July.

In the 420 class Carrie Smith and Ella Clark are a step closer to their second straight appearance at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships after winning the women’s fleet at the 420 Australian Championships which finished at Moreton Bay Boat Club earlier this week. Smith and Clark will bring a lot of the experience they gained competing at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships last December in the 470 class to the event and will be keen for a second straight Australian Youth Championships win in the 420 class.

In the 420 male fleet, Singaporeans Darren Choy and Nathan Tang take their overall win at the 420 class nationals into this event while Victorians Tom Klemens and James Oliver will be hot on their heels following their third place finish at the same regatta.

All the action can be followed from any computer with live GPS tracking and an event blog on the regatta website, www.youthchamps.org.au

Racing at the 2012 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championships continues until Tuesday 10 January.
