Today was the day when the team selection for the ISAF Youth Worlds was determined at the Dutch Youth Regatta, incorporating the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships.

So on day 3, there were two challenges playing out - ISAF Youth Worlds selection and aligning oneself to secure a podium place at the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships.

Another great day of racing and another superb scoreline for the series leaders Floris and Laurens van de Werken (NED) from today's 3 races, posting a 6,1,2. A discard has now come into play, but for the van de Werken's it played to the advantage of the second placed Dutch team of Pietter Goedhart and Lars van Stekelenborg and narrowed the points margin to the leaders. But as it turned out, that was of no concern for the ISAF Youth Worlds selection.

The day's opening Race 6 was a beautiful race with very steady wind, making it a race where teams with good boat speed and a good start managed to get in front of the fleet and could sail the course without losing their position. The usual top teams were in front, but the race win was claimed by Bart van de Hondel and Jasper Kleijweg (NED) which has helped to secure their position in fifth overall.

In race 7 the wind became much more unstable and the beat to the windwark mark was very difficult with a strong shift at the end favouring the boats on the left side of the track. The Belgian team of Quinten Lootens and Stijn van Hoye took advantage of the developing situation together with the ladies team Linda Farhni and Maja Siegenthaler (SUI). However, Floris and Laurens van de Werken managed a stunning performance and sailed to the front of the fleet showing super performance downwind, using the waves to narrow the distance between them and the top and eventually claim another race win.

Race 8 was to be the decider to select the Dutch boys' team who would represent the Netherlands at the 2011 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships. At this stage, the second placed Pieter Goedhart and Lars van Stekelenborg were still close to Floris and Laurens, with only 6 points in it.

For the girls' selection, Fieke van Dijk and Josca Hummel had already secured their selection to represent the Netherlands at the ISAF Youth Worlds, as they could not be beaten and had delivered the required performance.

Race 8 turned out to be quite exciting as a sporting battle unfolded between between Pieter and Lars and the Van de Werken brothers. Although in the beginning of the race they were close, it was again the downwind boat speed of the Van de Werkens which decided the race and the ISAF Youth Worlds selection.

With Goedhart / van Stekelenborg moving up into second, the leading ladies' team of Linda Farhni and Maja Siegenthaler (SUI) who were second overall going into today dropped down to third, but wrapped up their day of racing very nicely with a win in race 8. They took great advantage of the wind shifts on the left hand side of the course, to end the day only 2 points behind Goedhart / van Stekelenborg. So there is all to play for to claim the podium places for the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships going into Sunday's final day of racing.

The leading three boats have really secured a significant points margin over the rest of the fleet and demonstrated such consistent and solid sailing, that it is going to be a tough challenge for anyone to remove their podium places. However, for these top three boats the question is which place on the podium they will each secure for the 2011 Dutch 420 National Championships.
