DEFENDING 420 WORLD CHAMPIONS WIN 2019 WORLDS WARM-UP REGATTA
The Vilamoura Open Regatta or 420 Worlds warm-up regatta, was hotly contested over 3 days of racing and 6 races, with 64 teams competing.
Held from 28 June to 1 July, the event gave teams a great opportunity to improve their knowledge of the race track and local conditions in Vilamoura, and familiarize themselves with the general boat park set-up and onsite facilities ahead of the 420 Worlds.
No surprise to see defending 420 World Champions, Seb Menzies/Blake McGlashan of New Zealand come out strong and take the win in the 420 Open fleet, but they didn't have it easy in a fight to the end with Spain's Martin Wizner/Pedro Ameneiro. Last year, Wizner/Ameneiro claimed the 420 Junior Europeans gold medals, and their second place will only serve to boost their determination to come out on top at the 420 Worlds. Third to Jacobo Garcia/Antoni Ripoll (ESP), who last year finished second in the 420 Junior Europeans U17 fleet, and have now transitioned to senior racing.
In the 420 Women fleet, 2018 420 Worlds silver medallists Patricia Reino/Isabel Laiseca (ESP) won over Greece's Melina Pappa/Maria Tsamopoulou, with both teams claiming 3 wins apiece. Spain's Paula Van/Maria Del Mar Gil (ESP) in third.
In the U17 fleet Greece's Odysseas Spanakis/Konstaninos Michalopoulos claimed 3 out of 6 race wins to wrap-up victory by 5 points over Spain's Alberto Morales/Miguel Bethencourt. Third to Lampis Giannoulis/Simos Michalopoulos (GRE).
The 2019 420 World Championship kicks off on Wednesday 3 July, with racing from 6-11 July 2019.
