Final results in Hungary - Meet the 2022 420 World Champions

Lake Balaton blessed the International 420 Class on the last day of competition, delivering great 8-15 knots of wind and good waves for all the 488 sailors to enjoy of fantastic sailing conditions, wrapping the 2022 420 World Championships in an excellent way.

The day started very early in the morning as per scheduled, with the boats launching one hour after the sunrise, at 06:45. First warning signal was supposed to be at 08:00 but the wind was not enough then and all fleets returned to the club without racing.

After a couple of hours waiting on shore, the forementioned weather conditions were built and all the competitors returned to their courses to start racing at 12:00. Four hours later all races were finished and the competition successfully closed.

After the hearings, the Prize giving ceremony started and all the winners were awarded with medals. Spain was the nation with the highest placed boats considering all the championships so they were also awarded with the Francis Mouvet Trophy this year.

Final results - 420 Men/Mixed

The 420 Men/Mixed championship changed hands many times during the week and finally crowned brothers Fernando Flethes / Carlos Flethes ESP as new 2022 World champions with 51 points, after finishing 8-12-8 in the last races today. They were the best ones in total points as well, without considering the discard, so they did a fantastic job.

Silver and Bronze Men/Mixed medals were also for Spanish teams, with Sebastian Riquelme / Miquel Perez ESP finishing second and the recent 2022 420 Junior European champions Ian Walker / Finn Dicke ESP on third.

The overnight leaders Lampis Giannoulis / Eleni Giannouli GRE couldn’t repeat yesterday’s great performance and after scoring a 22-9-14 today they dropped to the fourth place, tied in 62 points with Ian and Finn.

The recent 2022 Youth Sailing World champions Freddie Parkin / Asher Beck USA were finally fifth, only 2 points behind the Bronze medalists and the Greek team.

The recent 2022 Youth Sailing World champions Maria Perello / Marta Cardona ESP won the Silver medal after a great comeback in the last days, closing the event 10 points behind the champions.

Women’s Bronze medal was for German sisters Beeke Segger / Siri Segger GER, tied in 51 points with fourth Dimitra Vartholomaiou / Metaxia Gogou GRE.

Solenza MARIANI, Antea MARIANI (FRA):

We are really happy. Today was good, we had 7th and 2nd positions, and after the race we already knew we were world champions. We still have not realized it, but the felling is good. We are very tired, but tonight we will pump it up. The championship was very tiring and difficult, we always waited for the wind, then tried to start, then waited again, the wind was shifty, so it was very complicated, but we did it.

Final results - 420 Under 17

Germans Severin Gericke / Xaver Schwarz GER dominated the Under 17 fleet during all the last days and crowned 2022 420 Under 17 Men/Mixed champions with 12 points after 8 races.

Severin GERICKE, Xaver SCHWARZ (GER):

It was very nice sailing in Balaton. Everything worked well, everything was perfect, the whole week was good. We were training hard, so we had high expectations, and we are really happy that we are world champions now. The most difficult point of the championship was to understand the waves here, the lake, because it is pretty unique, and pretty special.

Miguel Morales / Alejandro Martín ESP were second overall and got the Men/Mixed Silver medal, tied in 29 points with the new 2022 420 Under 17 Women champions Valentina Steinlein / Lea Adolph GER.

Valentina STEINLEIN, Lea ADOLPH (GER):

The first race did not go as we expected, we finished 13th, and this is the race we cancelled as our worst race. And from then on, we just have to keep fighting and we became second, it was a great race, and we had a lot of fun. The last race was the most memorable from the whole competition, because the German guys, who also became world champion and we were in front of the whole field. And our coaches were shouting, yeah, you are world champion, both of you, I think that was the best moment. It was a bit surreal, but we were so happy, I cannot describe the feeling. It was a very difficult championship, we had to push our limit, because we are not used to the light wind and lots of shifts, that was really challenging, but I think we did a good job, and we are really happy now.

Giulia Schultze / Andrea Vichi ITA won the Men/Mixed Bronze medal after finishing fourth overall with 33 points.

Ana Planinsic / Lara Bozic SLO and Iakovina Kerkezou / Danae Giannouli GRE were Women’s U17 Silver and Bronze medalists respectively.
