Grand Prix Vila de Blanes

06
Jan 2014

As is typical in Blanes, racing took place in really good conditions on the last day, the final of the four race days. Seven races, with 1 discard, were held for the 420 fleet, and it couldn’t have got any closer with racing ending on a tiebreak for first and second places.

Tiebreak Finish Rewards Spanish

Advantage though to Spain's Willy Pi Suñer and Alex Charles who counted more race wins to be crowned the overall winners. Second place to the Polish pair and top girls team of Ewa Romaniuk and Katarzyna Goralska. In third were Great Britain’s Max Clapp and Jo Burns.

Thirty-one teams contested the event, with just 2 points separating the top three teams as they went into the final day. Things were looking good for Max Clapp/Jo Burns after their win in race 7 moved them into the lead on 14 points, with the Spanish just behind on 15 points and then the Polish on 16 points. All change in race 7 with the British taking a black flag penalty, giving the opportunity for the Spanish and Polish teams to move on up. The two teams pushed each other around the track, with the Polish pair managing to finish just ahead of the Spanish, but it was not enough as they needed one more boat between them to seal victory.

The two teams finished on 19 points apeice, with the tiebreak in favour of Spain’s Willy Pi Suñer and Alex Charles.
