IMPERIA WINTER REGATTA IN ITALY LAUNCHES EUROSAF 420 RACE CIRCUIT
As the launch event of the European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF) and International 420 Class Association new EUROSAF 420 Race Circuit, Imperia Winter Regatta, 5-9 December was a perfect showcase of European 420 racing talent.
Racing was scheduled over four days, but big swell and no wind on Sunday kept teams off the race track, so the leaderboard was decided based on five races. Attracting eight-six 420 teams from across Europe – France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland – racing was close, particularly amongst the 420 women.
Italy dominated both leaderboards, as Lucille Frascari/Arianna Lanzetta went into the final race on an 7 point advantage, with a safely played eighth place result in the final race sealing the title. France’s Elise Leconte/Antea Mariana finished in 2nd, on tiebreak advantage over Elena Oddone/Francesca Riano.
In the 420 Open fleet, Italy’s Alessandro Caldari/Federico Caldari topped the scoresheet, not winning any races but racing consistently to win by a 9 point advantage over team mates Paolo Bozzano/Michele Casano. Third to Germany’s Jonathan Steidle/Leonardo Honold.
Scores for the EUROSAF 420 Race Circuit will be calculated based on a team’s best four results. EUROSAF will award medals to the top placed Boys/Mixed U19, Girls U19 and Open U17 teams across the six events. The best boys’ and girls’ teams under 19 and the best team under 17 will be eligible for an extra starting place (over the quotas for their nation) at the 2019 420 Junior European Championships in Vilagarcia de Arousa, north-western Spain, 23-30 July 2019, with the entry fee waived.
