New Titles and Quotas for the 2023 Championships

Dear Members,

The Executive Committee of the Int. 420 Class Association has decided to introduce a new World Champion title and modify the entry quotas for all Class championships.

More specifically, the first Mixed team in the rankings of the Men/Mixed fleet at the World Championship will be declared "Mixed World Champion", the first European Mixed team at the Junior European Championship will be declared "Mixed Junior European Champion" and when the Class runs an Open European Championship, the first European Mixed team in the Men/Mixed fleet will be declared "Mixed European Champion".

In addition, the U17 fleet in all championships will include a U15 sub-category, in which the first team will receive medals. For the Junior European Championship the first U15 team within the U17 fleet will be declared "U15 Junior European Champion".

For the Mixed World Champion title, World Sailing regulations prescribe a minimum of at least 20 entries so this is a target entry number that the class must achieve, in order to consolidate this title for the future.

Regarding the quota system, at the World and Open European Championships the Men/Mixed and Women fleets will have a combined total of 20 quota places per country, which can be distributed to each fleet as each NCA wishes. This is 3 places more than the previous limit of 10 Men/Mixed +7 Women quota places. The U17 fleet in those events will have a combined total of 8 places for Men/Mixed and Women's fleets but there will be an additional 2 quota places specifically for more U15 teams of any gender, if an NCA wishes to enter more teams in this new sub-category. For clarification, the 8 U17 quota places inlcude both U17 and U15 teams; this number may increase up to 10 quota places but these 2 extra places muct be given only to U15 teams.

The host country's team will have a combined total of 30 quota places for the Men/Mixed and Women fleets and 12 quota places for the U17 fleet plus 2 extra places for more U15 teams.

In addition to these quotas, the reigning World champions in each category will have the right to defend their title without using their own country's quota places, but only if they can still race in the same category.

For the Junior European Championship the quota places will be as follows: 12 combined places for the U19 Men/Mixed and Women fleets, 5 U17 and 2 extra U15 places in the U17 fleet if an NCA wishes to enter more U15 teams. The quota places for the host country will be 22 U19, 10 U17 and 2 extra for U15 teams only. In addition to these quotas, the reigning Junior European champions in each category will have the right to defend their title without using their own country's quota places, but only if they can still race in the same category.

With kind regards
