OPENING CEREMONY GETS 420 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FORMALLY UNDERWAY
The 2019 420 World Championship kicked off in style on Thursday 4 July with a parade of 462 sailors representing 24 nations around the waterfront at Vilamoura Marina.
2019 marks the first time the 420 Class has taken its annual World Championship to Vilamoura, and the organizers have delivered a fantastic venue.
Words of welcome from the 420 Class representative Fulvia Ercoli and local officials preceded a welcome party for all teams, coaches, volunteers, family and friends.
The Sailor’s Oath was given by the South African team of Matt Ashwell and Rivaldo Arendse who are competing in the U17 division and Portugal’s Mafalda Goncalves who is racing in the 420 Women.

Racing gets underway on Saturday 6 July, with six days of competition for teams to prove their race track skills. First up will be the practice race on Friday 5 July.
With separate racing fleets for Open, Women and the U17 division - the 420 Worlds embraces all levels of competition. To ensure the highest quality of racing, entries are limited by quotas for each division, with nations entitled to send teams as follows:
- 2019 420 World Championship - is open to teams of all ages. Each nation is entitled to 7 boats, with 14 boats for the host nation.
- 2019 420 Women’s World Championship - is open to teams of all ages. Each nation is entitled to 7 boats, with 14 boats for the host nation.
- 2019 U17 420 World Championship - is restricted to athletes aged 16 and under at the end of 2019.

The 2019 420 World Championship is one of the biggest sport events to be held in Portugal this year, contributing a significan social, sports and economic impact, particularly considering that some teams have stayed in Vilamoura for over a month.
According to Vilamoura Sailing over 1,500 people will be in Vilamoura, represending 10,500 sleep and over 42,000 meals which will generate a massive economic impact across the local economy, generating over 2 million euros of spend.
