Race day 3 results - 2022 420 World Championships

Fortunately the wind returned to Lake Balaton today for the third day of races of the 2022 420 World Championships.

Nice 6-10 knots of breeze allowed all 7 fleets to add 3 new races to scores, being now 5 in total.

Racing started at 10:00 as per scheduled on both courses. All 488 sailors could enjoy of fantastic sailing conditions during 4 hours under a lovely sun and warm weather, returning to shore around 14:30, excepting the U17 blue group who spent more time on water due to various general recalls on their last race of the day.

This way the Qualifying Series concluded. The Final Series will start tomorrow, with the fleets sailing now in Gold, Silver and Bronze groups.

The event will run until Saturday 13th, when we’ll meet our new 2022 420 World champions.

The following are the provisional results.

Race day 3 results - 420 Men/Mixed

The Spanish team formed by Jaime Ayarza / Mariano Hernandez ESP had a great day on water today, winning 2 of the 3 races (1-10-1 Yellow) and climbing to the top of the ranking with 8 points. Italians Luca Taglialegne / Silvia Versolatto ITA (5-7-1 Red) are second, tied in 10 points with the reigning 2022 Youth Sailing World champions Freddie Parkin / Asher Beck USA (UFD38-2-2 Yellow).

The overnight leaders Roy Levi / Ariel Gal ISR (UFD38-1-8 Yellow) come next and just one point behind with 11.

Recent Junior European’s vice champions Marc Mesquida / Ramon Jaume ESP (DSQ38-1-6 Red) are 5th overall with 12.

Jaime AYARZA MONTENEGRO, Mariano HERNANDEZ DE TORRES (ESP):

We are quite happy with the provisional results, and although we have been training in 420 boat, it is always surprising to be on top of the leaderboard. We are very happy with the races we have done. For good races you need good starts to be in the front of the fleet. We think the conditions were difficult, but we did quite well in the decisions, and we are happy to get these results. It is the first time that we are here at Lake Balaton, and we like it a lot, that the water has no salt, it’s quite surprising for us. The wind was good for these three races and we hope that it will be good in the Gold Fleet as well.

We are from the Canarian Island, so we sail in different conditions There is no land, so the wind is coming from the sea, it’s clear and stable. It is challenging here, but we have had good training days, and we started well the championship. The lesson we learnt, that stay calm, the wind is always changing, everyone has an opportunity, and always try a good start to be on top of the fleet.

Race day 3 results - 420 Women

Sister’s teams are dominating the Women’s championship, with Paula Laiseca / Isabel Laiseca ESP on top of the ranking with 10 points after scoring a 10-5-3 in the Yellow group, followed now by Solenza Mariani / Antea Mariani FRA with 15 (6-3-5 Yellow). Greeks Dimitra Vartholomaiou / Metaxia Gogou GRE are third but tied in 17 points with Esther Rodenhausen / Luisa Becker GER and Nora Garcia / Mariela Ventura ESP.

Paula LAISECA BUENO / Isabel LAISECA BUENO ESP:

The wind was stronger, when we got to the area, and then it went down, but we managed to do three races today, and it was pretty good. Today was very difficult for us, because the wind went up and down, we had to be very patient, but it was good.

I think the secret to this lake is having good starts and then being very patient and awaking on the boat to be very fast. There were plenty of plants, and we had to be careful not to get them with the foil.

Race day 3 results - 420 Under 17

The recent Bronze medalists in Vilamoura, Severin Gericke / Xaver Schwarz GER, continue to lead the U17 fleet with 7 points after scoring a 4-3-1 today in the Yellow group. Miguel Morales / Alejandro Martín ESP (4-12-1 Blue) are second, only 1 point behind the leaders. The Girl’s leaders Valentina Steinlein / Lea Adolph GER (1-1-7 Yellow) are third overall with 12.

Giulia Schultze / Andrea Vichi ITA are third in the U17 Men/Mixed championship with 15.

Iakovina Kerkezou / Danae Giannouli GRE and Ana Planinsic / Lara Bozic SLO complete the provisional U17 Girl’s podium.

Severin GERICKE, Xaver SCHWARZ (GER):

The whole day was very good, we had 4th, 3rd and 1st positions, but it was hard sailing also. The wind was very shifty and up and down. We had a difficult fleet, but we tried our best. Lake Balaton is tricky, especially the choppy waves, it’s really hard work on the upwind and downwind to be fast, but overall, it is very nice.

The secret is just looking after the wind, stay always focused, and the boat communication is always important here. The teamwork is important, especially on the downwind, but on upwind as well.

The first warning signal tomorrow is planned to be at 10:00. Coaches meeting at 08:00.
