Sustainability

The International 420 Class Association is taking steps to help support and encourage sailors, coaches, national class associations and event organizers  to reduce the impact our activities have on the environment.

The International 420 Class supports World Sailing's 'Sustainability Agenda 2030' initiative. Ratified at World Sailing's 2018 Mid-Year meeting in London, World Sailing's Sustainability Agenda 2030 outlines how the sport will contribute to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainability Agenda 2030 is split up into World Sailing's six main operational areas with a total of 56 different targets, ranging from participation to gender equality, water quality to single use plastic. Sailing is dependent on the environment and by following a few simple rules of conduct when sailing we can ensure our sport has no negative impact on the environment.

Below you will find a list of World Sailing documents which aim to provide sailors, race organizers, race officials, and any other person interested in the world of sailing, the necessary information to raise awareness, educate and help reduce the environmental impact from sailing:

World Sailing Code of Environmentally Friendly Behaviour - a one page document with basic advice on good environmental practice for any sailor around the world.

World sailing Guidance for Sailing Venues - a set of guidelines to be adopted by training centres or any sailing venue with an interest for sustainability. This document includes references to pollution control, energy and water use, waste management, wildlife and conservation.

World Sailing Green Event Guidance - this document provides a guidance for each role in a sailing event, (Race Organizer, Race Officials, competitors and support crew) aimed to ensure that sustainability issues are taken into consideration during its planning, staging and aftermath.
