World Champion Showdown

The Fish & Co Singapore Youth Sailing National Championships is the premier youth sailing event on the Singapore calendar, and one of three regattas to decide the national teams who will to represent Singapore at the elite youth sailing events around the world. This includes the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Cyprus this summer, with one place on offer in the 420 Girls and one in the 420 Boys events.

Competition is tight. At last year’s 420 Ladies World Championships, Singapore had three teams in the top four, including gold and silver. Kimberley Lim, who is helm of the leading 420, is a former Optimist World Champion from 2011, and against her in the 420 fleet at the Youth Sailing Nationals is the 2012 Optimist World Champion Yuki Yokoyama. So two helms with star quality and wanting to prove their place at the ISAF Youth Worlds. Lim/Siew represented Singapore at the 2012 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Ireland, finishing in 9th overall, before going on to dominate at the 420 Worlds.

Advantage Kimberly Lim/Savannah Siew on race day 1 with a 4 point advantage after 4 races, over Yuko Yokoyama/Jaziene Ong. Sailing as an open fleet with the 420 Boys, it was an all girls top 3 on the leaderboard after day 1. Hong Kong led the charge in the 420 boys with Luk Ping Yat Vincent/Tsoi yat Ming as the top boys’ team in 4th overall.

Nine different events are being contested at the Fish & Co Singapore National Youth Sailing Championship – with five one-person dinghy classes, the two-person 420 dinghy, and three windsurfing classes. 13 races are scheduled, through until Saturday 23 March, when the podium deciding Medal Race takes place.
