38th International Carnival Regatta
Slow and steady was the approach from Spain’s Santiago Mas Depares/Jaime Menescal who claimed victory on the final day of the 38th International Carnival Sailing Regatta with a 2,4 scoreline.
Really close racing saw three different leaders at the end of each day of the three-day regatta. Early leaders Joao Villas-Boas/Tomas Camel (POR) handed the baton to Goncalo Pires/Nuno Bajanca (POR) on day 2 with the Spanish taking over on the final day for their key victory. Pires/Bajanca were looking good to maintain their lead until an eleventh place in the final race saw them drop down to third.
The top home nation ladies’ team are Francisca Martins/Sofia Oliveira (POR) who went into the final day as the top overall ladies team, but ended their challenge in tenth overall and third ladies’ team after results of 14,28 from the day’s two races. A late charge from Spain’s Aura Miquel/Marina Cano, including a win in race 7, propelled them into sixth overall and award them the ladies’ title. In eighth overall and second ladies’ team are Joana Azevedo/Catarina Evangelista.
President of CIMAV, Valentine Costa, club organizer of the International Carnival Sailing Regatta, concluded that the 2012 edition was "a real success not only for the selected participants, which rose 20% compared to last year, but also by the level of these athletes, some Olympic other national and international champions."
