Mateu/De Maqua (Men/Mixed), Glimm/Madudeira (Mixed), Kerkezou/Giannouli (Women), Cindolo/Dogliotti (U17 Men/Mixed),  and Rodenhausen/Becker (U17 F), are the World Champions.

The 420 World Championship was held from 21 to 29 July in Alicante, Spain.

The 420 class World Championship finished this Saturday at the ’El Tiro’ facilities of the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, in which a total of 277 crews from 22 countries took part.

The new World Champions in each category were: In Men/Mixed the Spaniards Pol Mateu and Alejandro de Maqua; in Mixed the Brazilians Gustavo Glimm and Luisa Madudeira; in Women the Greeks Iakovina Kerkezou and Danel Giannouli; in U17 Men/Mixed the Italians Alessio Cindolo and Marco Doglioti and in U17 Women the Germans Esther Rodenhausen and Luisa Sophie Becker.

In the Men/Mixed category there were two Spanish medal winners, gold and silver. The Catalans Mateu and De Maqua were mathematically proclaimed champions after the eleventh race yesterday but they still went out to sail in the last race without taking risks and without pressure, to enjoy sailing on the final day knowing that they were World Champions. The Spaniards from the Canary Islands Miguel Ángel Morales and Alejandro Martín - world U17 runners-up in 2022 - repeated their silver medal, after defending their position well on the final day, followed by the Greeks Dimitrios and Nikolaos Sourlatzis who won the bronze medal. Canary Islanders Jaime Ayarza and Mariano Hernández were fourth, three points off the podium.

In the Mixed fleet, Brazilians Gustavo Glimm and Luisa Madudeira were the winners and became the first 420 Class Mixed world champions.

In the Women’s category, with the first two places confirmed from the penultimate day, the gold went to the Greeks Kerkezou and Giannouli and the silver to Brazilians Joana Gonçalves and Gabriela Vassel, these two crews did not need to compete in the final race. The bronze medal was the one that remained at stake and finally went to the Spaniards Nora García de la Casa and Mariona Ventura, who played for third position with the sisters Paula and Isabel Laiseca, who had to settle for fourth place.

In the U17 Men/Mixed category the gold went to the Italians Alessio Cindolo and Marco Doglioti, the silver to the Greeks Georgios Iraklis Michalopoulos and Ion Stamatios Stromatias and the bronze to the Italians Lisa Vucetti and Vittorio Bonifacio.

The German team of  Esther Rodahusen and Luis Sophie Becker took the gold in the U17 Women, with the Spanish team of Natalia Domingues and Ines Ameneiro taking silver and the American pairing of Helena Borcherding and Michelle Kaneti bronze.

Medals were also presented to under 15 sailors with gold going to Paolo Correale and Viola Vianzone from Italy, silver to Turkish Sailors Ece Aksoy and Elif Kayacik and bronze to Come and Theo Henry from France.

The Francis Mouvet Trophy for the best team went to Greece with a gold, silver and bronxe in each of the Championship fleets. 

It has been a very successful World Championship in which a total of 12 races were held, 6 in the Qualifying Phase and 6 in the Final Phase. It has been a championship where there have been all kinds of conditions, light winds on most days but also strong winds in the middle of the championship giving everyone a chance to perform.

The awards ceremony was led by the President of the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, Miguel Lopez Barbero, who was accompanied by the Councillor for the Presidency, Antonio Peral; the Councillor for Sports, Antonio Gallego; the Councillor for Urban Mobility, Carlos de Juan Carrillo; the Vice President of the FVCV, Rafel Chirivella and the Treasurer of the 420 International Class, Jackie Taylor.

The 420 World Championship had the institutional support of the Alicante City Council, especially the Sports and Tourism Councils, as well as the Alicante Provincial Council, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Alicante Port Authority.

In addition, private entities have joined the sponsorship and collaboration with the event, such as the Ford Movilsa dealership, SeaDek Europe -a company from Alicante that manufactures nautical covers- and Schweppes.
