Glamour day of racing at the 420 World Championships in Alicante

Leaders - Parkin/Beck (USA) in the Men/Mixed fleet, Kerkezou/Giannouli (GRE) in the Women and Cindolo/Dogliotti (ITA) in the U17.Alicante (25/07/23) - The second day of the 420 World Championship, which is being held until 29 July in the waters of Alicante, has been completed. Three races were held in all categories, a fact that contrasts with the opening day, in which only the women were able to compete. With the completion of three races, a discard for the worst result has already come into play.In the Men/Mixed categories, the American crew formed by Freddie Parkin and Asher Beck top the overall leaderboard, after a second, a first and a fifth, the latter position being provisionally discarded. Parkin and Beck, sailing in the red group, lead the overall standings by just one point after the discard. From there, a four-way tie on four points from second to fifth place, involving the Italians Flavio Fabbrini/Mateo Maione, who won the last race in the blue group; the Spanish Ignacio and Miguel Albo, who also won the last race in the red group, but cannot have a bad result in any more races, as their discard is a 33; the Italians Livia Ciampinelli/Nicola Brunotti, who won the first race in the blue group and the Germans Gericke/Xaver Severin, who took two seconds in the red group. In the women’s race, the Greeks Iakovina Kerkezou and Danae Giannouli are now the sole leaders, after the Spanish pair María Perelló and Marta Cardona, with whom they were co-leading, did not hold their own on the second day, dropping to thirteenth place. Kerkezoy and Giannouli sailed without difficulties and scored a 3-2-1. Spain’s Paula and Isabel Laiseca, who are in second place, just two points behind the Greeks, also sailed well. The Spanish from the Canary Islands scored a 1-4-2, and are still in sight of the lead. Third, tied with second, are the Croatians Noela Petesic/Petra Gambiraza, who made a first and a second right at the start of the day. One point behind, in fourth position, with their sights set on the podium, are the Spanish Nora García de la Casa/Mariona Ventura. In U17 the Italians Alessio Cindolo and Marco Dogliotti lead the overall with 5 points. A third, an eighth and a second, serve them to lead alone.. From there, the Germans Hannes Wehrle/Finn Meichle, second, and the Greeks Danae Miranda Aggelopoulou/Georgia Faviou, third, are tied on six points. The wind was blowing from the East (known as "Levante") from 10-12 knots from the very start. The weather forecast for tomorrow Wednesday, when it is hoped to complete the Qualifying Phase - provided that five races have been sailed - is similar or even better than today. The organisers are confident that this first part of the championship can be completed and that the Final Phase can get underway on Thursday.

The 420 World Championship has the institutional support of the Alicante City Council, especially the Sports and Tourism Councils, as well as the Alicante Provincial Council, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Alicante Port Authority.
Also, private entities have joined the sponsorship and collaboration with the event, such as the Ford Movilsa dealership, SeaDek Europe -a company from Alicante that manufactures nautical covers- and Schweppes.OVERALL CLASSIFICATIONS (After two days)Men/Mixed (130 participants)1.Parkin/Beck (USA), 3 points2.Fabrinni/Maione (ITA), 4 points3.Albo/Albo (ESP), 4 pointsWomen (64 participants)1.Kerkezou/Giannouli (GRE), 4 points2.Laiseca/Laiseca (ESP), 6 points3.Petesic/Gambiraza (CRO), 6 pointsU17 (83 participants)1.Cindolo/Dogliotti (ITA), 5 points2.Werlhe/Meichle (GER), 6 points3.Aggelopoulou/Faviou (GRE), 6 points
