Apr 2012

Taking place from 25-31 March 2013 in Liceo Casino de Vilagarcia, on the north west Spanish coast, the Spanish 420 National Championships attracted 76 teams. As well as battling for the 2013 National Championship titles, also in contention was selection to the national team to represent Spain at the premier youth events this Summer, including the ISAF Youth Worlds, 420 Worlds, 420 Ladies Worlds and 420 Junior Europeans.

The teams, boys and girls, sailed as one fleet, with an outstanding performance from Pedro Martinez/Luis Bugallo who not only claimed the Junior National Championship title but also the Overall National Championship crown. The pair had sealed enough of a margin that they could relax a little in the final race, and sailed a conservative race to cross the line in 14th an take their victories. The pair finished third overall last year, and attributed this year’s win to their coach Bruno Gago.

Despite a win in the final race, it was just not enough to step up the podium place of the silver medallists Javier Antich/Pedro Terrones, who finished 3 points behind Martinez/Bugallo. The top girls’ team and third overall were Silvia Mas/Nuria Miro.

Of the 76 teams competing, 32 were girls teams and 42 were junior teams. The 420 Class continues to grow in Span and is established as the solid choice of two-person dinghy for those moving out of the Optimist.
